When the heat is unbearable and the sweltering room gets on your nerves, air conditioner sounds like a bliss from the high heavens, but it could get frustrating especially if you are planning to install a casement air conditioner to your windows. Not only it might get too pricey but there’s a lot of things to be done before you can enjoy the cooling sensation of having your air conditioner installed.
Instead, if you have a casement or crank up windows, a portable conditioner might prove to be a more practical solution than having a casement air conditioner installed. Especially since the window kit that comes along with most portable air conditioners is designed to go along with a traditional sliding window, so it’s a cool choice for a cool solution. And also, portables are great since you can practically move it to a lot of place. The easiest way to vent the portable AC to a casement or crank up windows is to create an insert that will fit into it, doing this will keep the cool air in and the sweltering heat out.
First thing first, prepare the tool kit. You will need; Plexiglas or Styrofoam as a good barrier to separate the cold air in and the hot air out, you can also use another material-type but suitable for the purpose. Next, what you’ll need is a latch or a similar thing like that for the purpose of holding your casing window open and keeping it secured. Then, you will also need retainer clips or twist clamps to keep the Plexiglas or the ‘barrier material’ of your choosing to keep it attached to the frame of the window. Finally, you will need a self adhesive or caulking weather stripping to help sealing the insert and make it weatherproof reasonably. After those things are ready, so are you. Now, let’s get on to the work!
1. Fabricate the insert hole
Before you make access, first you have to measure how large your window size to determine the size of your insert should be. After you’ve come into the just the right measurement, grab a vent hose and visit your local hardware store or local glass store for a piece of Styrofoam or Plexiglas suitable according to the measurements you have taken down. Have them cut it the same size and make sure you bring your vent hose with you while at it to prevent any mistake that may happen while cutting off the hole. Also, keep in mind to plan out details before you cut or drill an insert. Because an inch or two mistake will determine whether the vent hose match the insert or not.
2. Install the new insert
To make your portable air conditioner into a casement air conditioner, the next step you can do is to install the new insert you’ve obtain from the first step. To do this, open the window and latch it to hold it securely in, make sure that the window is reasonably secure and won’t be damaged from weather aspect such as harsh wind or even light breeze. Next, installing the insert to the frame of the window. This can be achieved either by using twist clamps to secure it or using retainer clips like the one used on the back of a picture frame.
3. Make your insert weatherproof
Caulking the space where the casing and the window frame meets will do the trick. You can also use other options such as self adhesive weather stripping
The last step needs to be don is to attach the vent hose into the insert and set up the portable air conditioner.
